Research at CGI is conducted in 3 fields of science: Applied Biological Sciences (ABS):Environmental Health, Chemical Sciences (CS), and Environmental Toxicology (ET), each with its own uniqueness, while also relating and linking to one another. The expertise in all 3 fields of research can be pooled to address pressing environmental health issues, e.g. new and existing diseases related to the environment.
In order to address these environmental health issues effectively, a comprehensive understanding of the science behind the problem is required, e.g. identification of potential molecular targets for new therapeutics. Once targets have been identified, therapeutics have to be developed/engineered, preferably from local resources, to interact with those targets in ways that inhibit or significantly ameliorate effects associated with the disease. At the same time, these therapeutics need to be tested to determine potential toxic side effects, as a means for assuring safety of patients to whom these therapeutics are administered. In this way, the research in these 3 unique fields of science converge to help solve environmental health problems.
Another aspect of research that is emphasized at CGI is “translational research”. This is important, particularly in developing economies that aim to be able to sustain that development. “Bench to bedside” research involves a focused approach to converting basic scientific research to tangible use, e.g. new and innovative pharmaceuticals for addressing pressing health concerns, through the efforts of the staff of MIT, CGI and corporate partners.
